In real life nothing like this really happens. Although, we do have war, and some do treat the poor unfairly, like they do in the novel. I think if America goes down hill we could end up like that though.
Both in the book and in reality, oppression and poverty are common problems among people in the world. In America we mostly see the poverty aspect of this, but in other countries, people and subjugated by their government, just as the Capitol and the Districts. "The Hunger Games" is also very similar to another book, "Battle Royale", in which teenagers are forced to fight to the death on a remote island.
One topic that the Hunger Games and the real world have in common is economic differences. There are certain countries that are lucky to have a great deal of wealth, but other countries are trapped in poverty. In The Hunger Games, the Capitol has money, riches, and fancy items. Unfortunately, the 12 districts of Panem are lacking in many essential items, such as food.
The media in the real world and the novel seems to be pretty similar. As they are both very active and maybe to much into some people lives. There are a lot of televisions in Panem for people to see what is going on with the media.
